Turkish Mosaic Lamps: A Buyer’s Guide to Types, Sizes and Care
Few objects capture the magic of Istanbul’s bazaars like a glowing Turkish mosaic lamp. Hundreds of small pieces of coloured glass scatter light across the room and create a warm, almost theatrical atmosphere. If you’re thinking of bringing one home, this guide covers the different types, how to choose the right size and how to look after it.
How mosaic lamps are made
Traditional mosaic lamps are made by hand. Artisans glue small pieces of coloured glass and glass beads onto a glass globe, following geometric or floral patterns inspired by Ottoman and Anatolian art. The gaps between the pieces are then filled with grout, and the globe is mounted on a metal fitting, usually brass or bronze-coloured. Because every piece is placed by hand, no two lamps are exactly the same.
Types of mosaic lamps
- Table lamps: the most popular choice — perfect for bedside tables, shelves and sideboards.
- Pendant (ceiling) lamps: single globes or clusters of several globes hanging at different heights.
- Floor lamps: tall stands with one or more globes, ideal for living-room corners.
- Wall lamps (sconces): great for hallways and narrow spaces.
- Candle holders and tea-light lanterns: a small, budget-friendly way to enjoy the same colours.

Choosing the right size
Globe size is usually given as a diameter. As a rule of thumb, small globes (around 10–13 cm) create a soft accent light for bedside tables; medium globes (around 16 cm) suit living rooms and sideboards; and large globes or multi-globe lamps make a statement in larger spaces. When in doubt, think about where the light will fall: mosaic lamps are decorative mood lighting rather than reading lights.
Choosing colours
- Multicolour: the classic bazaar look — vibrant and playful.
- Blue and turquoise: calm and fresh, inspired by Iznik tiles.
- Red, amber and gold: warm and cosy, perfect for evenings.
- White and silver: elegant and easy to combine with modern interiors.
Electrical details
Check the product page for the bulb type, cable length and plug. Low-wattage LED bulbs in a warm white tone work best: they keep the glass cool and make the colours glow. If you’re ordering for a country with a different plug type, a simple plug adapter or a local electrician can help.
Caring for your lamp
- Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth or brush.
- Don’t use water or chemical cleaners — they can loosen the glass pieces.
- Switch the lamp off and let the bulb cool before cleaning or changing it.
- Small colour variations and handmade irregularities are part of the charm, not defects.
